Units covered

Unit 1 – The Causes and Consequences of Workplace Fires

This unit explains the common causes of fire in different types of work environments and how human behaviour and negligence can contribute to fire risk. It also highlights the devastating impact that fires can have on lives, property, business continuity, and the environment. Learners will understand the difference between accidental, deliberate, and electrical fires and explore the importance of fire prevention strategies.

Unit 2 – Fire Safety Legislation and Responsibilities

Here, learners are introduced to fire safety law, particularly the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. You’ll learn about the role and duties of the ‘Responsible Person’, and how fire safety is a shared responsibility. The unit also explores enforcement powers, penalties for non-compliance, and how fire safety responsibilities are allocated in the workplace.

Unit 3 – Understanding Fire Risk Assessments

This unit covers the five steps of fire risk assessment: identifying hazards, identifying people at risk, evaluating and controlling risks, recording findings, and reviewing procedures. Learners will understand how risk assessments are conducted, how hazards are categorised, and how findings are used to improve fire safety procedures and controls.

Unit 4 – Fire Prevention and Protection Methods

Learn about the control measures used to prevent the spread of fire, including safe storage of flammable substances, regular maintenance of electrical systems, and employee awareness. This unit also explains the principles of fire-resistant materials, compartmentation, fire doors, smoke control systems, and how these features can reduce the speed and impact of a fire.

Unit 5 – Fire Detection and Alarm Systems

In this unit, learners will explore how fire detection systems work, including smoke alarms, heat detectors, and break-glass call points. The unit covers fire alarm protocols, zoning of alarms, routine testing, and what staff should do upon hearing a fire alarm. You’ll also learn how to identify common faults in alarm systems and the importance of maintaining them.

Unit 6 – Safe Evacuation Procedures and Emergency Plans

This unit provides comprehensive training on how to plan and execute a safe evacuation in case of fire. Learners will understand the importance of clear signage, designated escape routes, assembly points, and personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs). Fire warden duties during evacuations are also covered, including accountability, supporting vulnerable individuals, and coordinating with emergency services.

Unit 7 – Types of Fire Extinguishers and Their Use

Learn how to identify different types of fire extinguishers (water, foam, CO₂, dry powder, wet chemical) and the types of fire each is suitable for. This unit includes guidance on how to use an extinguisher safely using the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep). It also covers fire blanket use, maintenance checks, and when it’s appropriate—or not—to attempt to extinguish a fire.
