All about this First Aid at Work (FAW) course
This comprehensive Level 3 First Aid at Work course is designed for individuals who are designated as workplace first aiders in medium- to high-risk environments such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, schools, and larger offices. Accredited by Highfield Qualifications, this three-day course provides learners with the knowledge and skills to respond to a wide range of medical emergencies.
The course complies fully with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and meets the standards required by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It is suitable for anyone seeking a formal first aid qualification and includes practical assessments and written tests.
On successful completion, learners receive a certificate valid for three years, with annual refresher training recommended.

Units covered
Unit 1 – Understanding the Role and Responsibilities of a First Aider
This unit introduces the key responsibilities of a designated first aider in the workplace. You will learn about legal duties, maintaining confidentiality, assessing incidents, and the importance of personal protection and infection control. It also includes record-keeping and communication with emergency services.
Unit 2 – Assessing Incidents and Managing Casualties
Learn how to conduct a scene assessment and perform a primary and secondary survey on a casualty. You will gain practical skills in dealing with unconscious individuals, determining breathing status, and prioritising treatment when multiple casualties are involved.
Unit 3 – Administering CPR and Using an AED
This critical unit provides in-depth instruction on how to perform adult CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). You’ll learn to recognize cardiac arrest, apply the chain of survival, and practice high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths.
Unit 4 – Managing Major Illnesses and Injuries
You will explore how to respond to a wide range of serious health conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, seizures, asthma attacks, and diabetic emergencies. This unit covers recognising symptoms and providing appropriate support until professional help arrives.
Unit 5 – Treating Wounds, Bleeding, and Shock
This unit covers a variety of injuries including open wounds, embedded objects, internal bleeding, and the treatment of shock. You’ll also learn about controlling bleeding using direct pressure and bandages, and how to manage casualties who may be going into hypovolemic shock.
Unit 6 – Fractures, Sprains, and Musculoskeletal Injuries
Understand how to identify and assist with suspected fractures, dislocations, strains, and sprains. Learn how to support injuries using slings and improvised devices, and how to keep casualties comfortable while awaiting emergency services.
Unit 7 – Burns, Scalds, and Eye Injuries
This unit teaches how to treat different types of burns, from minor to severe, including chemical and electrical burns. You’ll also learn safe methods for managing eye injuries, foreign objects, and when to refer the casualty for urgent care.
