This accredited one-day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is ideal for those who are nominated as a workplace first aider or who want to be prepared in emergency situations. It meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and is suitable for low-risk work environments such as offices, retail, and small businesses.

Delivered in a practical and engaging format, the course equips you with essential life-saving skills and the confidence to respond to a range of workplace incidents. It’s ideal for anyone looking to meet their legal obligations or simply be prepared to help others.

Assessment is done through practical demonstrations and a short multiple-choice test. Certification is valid for 3 years.

Units covered

Unit 1 – The Role of the First Aider

This unit introduces the responsibilities of a first aider in the workplace. You’ll learn about the importance of assessing an incident, preventing cross-infection, and keeping yourself and others safe. It also explains the legal aspects of providing first aid and when to contact emergency services.

Unit 2 – Managing an Emergency

You’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to manage a first aid situation. This includes conducting a primary survey, assessing a casualty’s condition, and making decisions quickly under pressure. The unit also covers dealing with unresponsive but breathing individuals and using the recovery position effectively.

Unit 3 – CPR and AED Use

Learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adults and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). You will practice chest compressions and rescue breaths, along with safe and effective AED operation, in accordance with current resuscitation guidelines.

Unit 4 – Choking and Airway Management

Understand the causes of choking and learn how to respond if someone is choking. This unit includes recognition of partial and complete airway obstruction and how to apply back blows and abdominal thrusts safely and effectively.

Unit 5 – Treating Minor Injuries and Wounds

This unit covers how to treat common injuries including cuts, grazes, bruises, splinters, and minor burns. You will also learn the importance of hygiene when dressing wounds and what to do if a casualty is bleeding heavily.

Unit 6 – Seizures, Shock and Medical Conditions

Learn how to recognise and respond to shock, fainting, seizures, and other medical emergencies. This unit provides guidance on when to seek further help and how to provide reassurance and care while waiting for medical professionals to arrive.

Unit 7 – Incident Reporting and First Aid Kits

Understand the importance of reporting incidents and recording injuries in the accident book. You will also explore the legal requirements for workplace first aid kits and the importance of maintaining supplies for readiness in emergencies.
